Here we are – it’s been a great season and we’re only about two thirds of the way through “A Storm of Swords.” A crapload happens in the last third of the book, plenty for an entire season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the showrunners bring in some of the early parts of “A Feast for Crows” and “A Dance with Dragons” as well. We’ve already seen some Dance with Dragons stuff with the Theon scenes, after all. Anyway, final power rankings for Season 3, then, I promise, it’ll be back to movies (at least until Boardwalk Empire premieres in the fall).
1. House Targaryen (Last Week – #3)
Danaerys Stormborn is getting good at this sacking cities and freeing slaves gig. With no White Walkers bearing down upon her kingdom and three dragons that are only getting bigger, she ends the season as #1.
2. House Lannister (Last Week – #1)
Tywin has the world by the parts Varys is missing. His enemies are defeated or severely weakened. His son is back in King’s Landing. He’s reached the top of the mountain, but there’s only one way to go from here.
3. The Night’s Watch (Last Week – #4)
Jon and Sam are back and they have Stannis on his way. First, however, they have to deal with the Wildlings, and then…
4. The Others (Last Week – NR)
The White Walkers are coming. If Stannis is the only one who volunteers to help fight them off, the realm is doomed regardless of how the high lords play their game of thrones.
5. House Baratheon (Last Week – NR)
Stannis has finally gotten out of his rut and is going on the offensive again. He should know better by now than to act rashly without hearing Davos out.
6. House Frey (Last Week – #2)
Now that the Lannisters are done with using House Frey to achieve their ends, I predict a well deserved downfall for these pieces of crap. Winter is coming for sure, but I’d rather see them dealt with by Fire and Blood.
7. House Bolton (Last Week – #6)
The Rooster gets his wardenship of the North, his son has broken Theon (after torturing hims all season). Still, he’s a hanger-on, and hangers-on don’t have long life expectancies in the game of thrones.
8. House Stark (Last Week – #8)
No, we can’t drop them off the countdown completely, not when Arya is on her way to becoming a one woman killing machine. Bran is finally continuing on his quest as well, which was a good payoff to end the season.
Also receiving votes: House Tyrell, the Free People, The Brotherhood without Banners, House Tully, the Yunkai, the Emancipation Proclamation, Tyrion’s sobriety, and sending evil children to bed without any supper.
